Classic Albums Revisited: When You fish upon my car

Long before these kids today roamed around Passamaquoddy with their portable Walkman cassette players, we used to listen to albums for entertainment.  Fred Appleton recently came across an old classic while rummaging through his LP collection…

“Pinochle” was of course the classic story of the little wooden fishing boy that is swallowed by a whale and is only able to escape when he learns various fishing knots. The film was a hit and revitalized the act of using crickets as bait.  To this day, the songs have been carved into the Passamaquoddy mindset…

  • HI-Diddle-Dee-Dee (an angler’s life for me)
  • Give a fish a whistle
  • I’ve got no 6 lb fishing lines

and of course the most famous

  • When you fish upon my car…

This song has been a major part of our very fabric with appearances in many shows and parades.  Most famously, it is featured in the “Fishes” nighttime celebration.

Here are the lyrics as transcribed by Fred Appleton:

When you fish upon my car
Cast your lure out deep and far
Anything your hook may find
Will come to you

So bring along your minnow pail
and soon we’ll fill your fishing well
When you fish upon my car
As anglers do

Earthworms are kind
They bring to those who fish
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a Starfish from sea
Fate steps in and feeds you through
When you fish upon my car
Your dreams come true
