Bad News

This week is supposed to be a celebratory one, with the holiday and the return of our towns mayor from a kidnapping. But we begin with some bad news as one of our major entertainers for the week has had to back out.  The VOICES OF LIBERTY, a wonderful a capella groupwas scheduled to open the 4th of July celebration at the Passamaquoddy band shell.  They were also scheduled to perform at the All-Starfish resort as well.  Unfortunately, even a healthy salad with salmonela tomatoes is enough to put the most basso profundo onto extended bathroom duty.  So the VOICES OF LIBERTY are out for this year.

All is not lost as we have already started scouring the planet for some to replace the voices of liberty…  We will keep you informed.

This week, the film opened with a healthy $96 dollar take Quoddywide.  If you’ve seen it, tell us what you think…

Help from the jungle

The whole town of Passamaquoddy has been up in arms about the kidnapping of our own Glenn Whelan. Spirits are high, and most feel he will be returned to us. Some feel he is under the control of some fellah in Iowa.

No matter what the situation, the town is unexpectedly burgeoning with people from across the world. They are here to offer there help.

We’ve got detectives and super sleuths, even children who have put on bake sales to raise money .

One of the most peculiar but still appreciated help came from the photographer DEVINE who came out of the woods to offer his services in getting the pictures out.

On a separate note, check out this website, THE MAGIC IN PIXELS for some awesome Disney photos.

Music Hall: Stephen Sondheim

Last night was the first concert honoring the music of Disney, now it is our turn to discuss the works. From film to stage, from theme parks to theme songs, we’re going to explore the musical best at our beautiful Passamaquoddy music hall in a way only a Passamaquodian can do using only text and without the benefit of a computer sound card.  As it can be assumed from the past several posts, we’ll first take a look at the music in DICK TRACY.

What?  Aw, c’mon kid… we just ate.

THE SONGS

Although it is not a musical by definition, the film does have a few performance numbers that not only confirm the era, but are also prominent in the story structure as many of the elements are explored through montage.  To fulfill this task, director Warren Beatty turned to his collaborator on REDS, Stephen Sondheim.  The songs are deceptively simple and seem to channel the Gershwin brothers.  Three of the songs are nicely performed by Madonna as her character Breathless Mahoney.  They are BACK IN BUSINESS, MORE and the Academy Award Winning SOONER OR LATER. In an additional song, my personal favorite WHAT CAN YOU LOSE she is joined in duet with Mandy Patinkin.  There is also a source music piece, LIVE ALONE AND LIKE IT that was recorded by Mel Torme.

Sondheim is an American musical treasure albeit quite a controversial one.  Outside of politics it is difficult to find a more polarizing figure, a distinction shared with his opposite, Great Britain’s Andrew Lloyd Webber.  A love of one often results in a passionate hatred of the other…  Then there is us in the purple states.  We see value in both.  Still Sondheim’s work is legendary from lyrics on WEST SIDE STORY to INTO THE WOODS and his magnum opus SWEENEY TODD.  If you’ve read this far I’ll share the weirdest thing about Sondheim, his name is coincidentally an anagram for “hedonism”.  There go the red states…

Dick Tracy is musically more than just the Sondheim songs, it also has a powerful musical score composed by Danny Elfman, but that’s for another discussion…

You gotta love it!: DickTracy (1990)

My two way wrist radio hasn’t been filled with “Too much Dick Tracy” messages.  Either you love them, or I’m the only techie with a two-way wrist radio…  (I’ve also got a toaster that can handle two slices at a time!)

So what would a gangland hit look like using Sunday morning comic colors?

The Ellenshaw Museum: Dick Tracy (1990)

Today’s visit to the Ellenshaw Museum takes us to the wing of Peter’s talented son Harrison.  Harrison did not have the longevity with the Disney organization that his father did, but his impact may have been even more prominent.  After all, he left Disney to work on a small independent film called STAR WARS.  Harrison continued the matte processes perfected by his father but was even more creative in the design of other unique special effects.  And his occasional return to the Disney studio was for such landmark visual films as THE BLACK HOLE, TRON and DICK TRACY.

Now mattes were even more interactive, including movement previously unavailable in a static painting.  In one of the first major mattes of Dick Tracy we travel across a massive cityscape featuring moving trains and blinking lights.  Harrison even got his father involved with Dick Tracy by having him dabble on the huge twenty plus foot scene.

In an interesting homage to Harrison, who creates a perfectly counterfeited world, a counterfeiter uses a stolen check to mimic Dick Tracy’s signature and writing style…  The Payee?
