Broken News: East Meets West

After the premiere of the 25th Anniversary paint job at Sandollar Ella’s castle, we posted a photo of the Sandollar before it was pinked.

One very astute reader reminded us of the companies earlier history actually starting in California…

Here is Andy’s comment:

“Most people forget that Ella has a brother, Drunk Barty, that lives on the other coast. Even though he is a raging drunk, he has managed to keep his restaurant open for quite a while as well.

It’s a little known fact that Barty and Ella got the money to open their restaurants when Barty won a lawsuit after slipping on a wet floor at the annual fish gutiin’ contest. Since the slippin’ made Barty rich, he named his restaurant Slippin’ Barty’s. He renamed it for the month of January as well.

Slippin’ Barty’s Castle!”

It turns out Andy is right on the money. We feel badly that we didn’t get it reported properly the first time. But we have found a photgraph of Barty taken in front of his establishment in 1972… We’ve also included a picture of the sandollar again for comparison…

  • So, do we call it Passamaquoddy East?

And since Jeff Pepper has a relative, what about Lou Mongello? Did he ship a relative of to Passamaquoddy?

    Lou F. Mongerer? Hmmm

You should probably call the Passamaquoddy Public Library and look him up in the City Directory.

  • biblioalphabet,

Actually out east its called “Quaddyland”… But its a small place… (It fits in the parking lot of Passamaquoddy bait and tackle.)

  • I recall the first time I saw Sand Dollar Ella’s. I was just stepping off the coal train at Main Street. I just stood in awe. I mean it was such larger in scale compared to Slippin’ Barty’s.

  • Yeah, Ella’s is taller than Barty’s and you can see it from all over Quaddyland. I think at one time, Ella was considering putting a little girl’s beuaty salon inside her restaurant. Anybody know anything about that?

  • Yes, Ella is putting in a beauty salon for girls. Little girls can choose to look like a trout, a carp or a flounder. Every mother dreams of her little girl growing up and wanting to look like crap, I mean a carp.

  • Is there a Shrimp outfit for toddlers?
