A Quarter Century Celebrated: Part Three

October 1, 2007. Twenty-five years from the day of the premiere of EPCOT CENTER.

In the interest of full disclosure. I was not at the opening day in 1982. Back then it didn’t seem to be an option. My family first experienced the new park in late October of that year. (So my personal Epcot 25th anniversary would be.. probably today.)

I arrived earlier on October 1st than I did the day before (reported in an earlier blog down below). Again met with some old friends and made some new ones. Lou Mongello was there… Adam Roth, still on a deserved major high… The fabulous Deb Wills… My great friend Bryan Ripper of the “All About the Mouse” podcast fame and his wife, Amy. Many, many people that have made an impact on our Disney interests.

As we enter the turnstile, with “Energy, you make the world go round” playing, I headed with the herds to find an incredibly long line to by some of the limited merchandise. After a few minutes, I skipped out on the line and went into MouseGears to find the same merchandise, (including the limited pins, shirts and figments), and bought my share.

The watch is limited to 250 pieces, came in a cool box. You’ll notice that the watch also features the infamous Spaceship Earth wand!

After spending what must be the equivalent of a years rent in Manhattan, we headed out to catch the rope drop and to the arena for viewing the re-dedication. We actually stayed off to the side and had great seats outside Innoventions East’s south door. After the spectacle, the “Celebration” crew got together for a photo… Several of the Epcot dignitaries got into the photo as well…

I lost my cellphone early in the day. I’m not sure where it was… that’s why I used the word “lost”. I checked with guest services and at all the attractions I had visited but had no luck. Oh, well.

Like the previous nights ride on Soarin’ the Celebration crew met for a group ride on “Journey into your imagination” and the American Adventure. We also sat in on Marty Sklar’s eye-opening look back on the first 25 years of Epcot.

My friends and I had dinner at the Italian restaurant (Tutto Italia which replaced Alfredo’s) and were joined by Lonnie, a host at the American Adventure. His energy and passion for his work are extremely notable. Any chance to talk with Lonnie is recommended.

After dinner, we took in Illuminations with the special tag, but not before getting drenched by a sudden rainstorm. We sought cover under a six inch overhang at one of the “food and wine festival” stands. Needless to say, the overhang was not enough to protect us at all. Walt’s weather in full force, it stopped just in time for Illuminations. It was phenomenal, making me forget how gross my clothing felt.

The evening came to an end and we said our goodbyes… but not before one final stop at Guest services where…

…they FOUND MY CELLPHONE!

Disney magic…
